For the stars, I just created a black layer, added Noise and set Layer Mode to Screen (as you might guess). I usually use a Noise-Value of about 7-8.
Then I go to Image -> Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast and set Contrast to 100. I do this twice. Next, I press Ctrl+M and move the point in the centre a bit more towards the upper left corner. Next, I again apply a Contrast of 100 (like I did before) and again I go the Curves-dialogue (Ctrl+M) and move the point towards the upper left corner.
I repeat these steps several times, until I'm happy with the result.
This way, you get quite a realistic star background, without having to use the Eraser-tool at all
